Nelson
Bay Weekend Getaways.A beautiful location just 3½ hours drive north of Sydney. The entrance to Port Stephens is rather treacherous, with many submerged reefs and rocks, hence the number of wrecks in the area, eg, the collier "Oakland" lies on sand in 30m off the northern side of tiny Cabbage Tree Island. Nelson Bay also has great shore dives, Halifax & Fly Point are full of marine life and you can get to depths of 25 to 30 metres.
