Located at the end of Gowrie Street and short walk (50 metres) down the esplanade is the Bass & Flinders dive site. Jibbon Point provides this dive site with plenty of protection from waves and surge, hence this site is dive able when most others are not. This makes Bass & Flinders popular for dive schools (which can often be seen there). The walk to and (especially) from the dive site can be demanding considering the steepness of the esplanade and the weight of your dive equipment, so take it easy. Leading down to the water are some weather worn concrete steps, be careful to not lose your footing (particularly in the wet).
Upon entering the water, take a bearing towards the water 's edge to the north, descend to 3 metres and then follow the reef keeping it to your left on the way out and to your right on the way back. There are plenty of rock formations to explore along the way. This site can be dived anytime, although the visibility is best at high tide. Some divers take advantage of the outgoing tide and drift dive towards Oak Park, however the majority of divers reach the channel marker and decide to turn back. The area is frequently traversed by boats, hence it is important that you keep a watchful eye when ascending; use of a dive flag is recommended. The topography is a sandy, rocky shelf, with some sponge and there is a squeeze swim through to investigate. Blue Gropers and Goat Fish frequent the area along with the occasional Wobbegong Shark.
If you plan to dive this site for the first time, our friendly instructors & dive masters would welcome the opportunity to fully brief you on this site prior to your dive. |
