Following
Captain Cook drive all the way till you reach the Toll Gate into Kurnell
National Park that will lead you to this magnificent dive site. Make sure
you have $6 in change on you as the machine does not accept notes. Once in
the park continue up the road, past the discovery centre entrance and exit
to a gravel road on your left. Turn in here and you will find that the road
loops around. Follow the loop and park in front of the timber logs.
Situated in
front of you will be a big monument, if you walk towards this monument you
will be able to locate the entrance to the left side of this dive site.
Looking down at the water you will see a gutter; this is a great spot to put
on your mask, snorkel and fins. Once on, snorkel straight out till your
approx. halfway between the shoreline and the white pylon. The depth here
will be around 2m so nice enough to get comfortable on the bottom. When
settled keep swimming out through the kelp, (keep an eye out for weedy sea
dragons) until you reach the reef wall. This wall will drop down to approx
10m. Try not to hit the bottom as it is very silty. Follow the wall to
depths of around 13m. You can then either turn around and return along the
same wall or you can continue on and exit using the right hand sides
entry/exit point. If continuing on keep to the shallower depths of the wall
to find the exit. (Recommended you have done both sides before attempting to
go from one entry/exit to the other.)
The right hand
side of this dive is best done on an incoming tide. The entry/exit point can
be found by keeping the bush to your close right and walking through the
reserve towards the water. A path down to the water can be seen and should
be followed till you reach a small cove that also has a small gutter to
allow divers easy access into the water. (Permitted there is no swell).
Once in the water, snorkel out towards bare island until you reach a small
sandy patch, this is a great place to descend. The depth here is around
3-4m. Keep swimming out over the kelp till you reach some rocks in around
6m. you can follow this wall along or you can continue on till you reach
another wall which drops down to 10-11m onto a sandy bottom. Turn right and
follow the wall along, you will get around 12-14m from this section. A
massive sponge garden will attract your eyes so you don’t have to swim too
far for it to get interesting. Keep an eye out for those sea dragons and
even some sea horses.
If you plan to dive this site for the first time, our friendly instructors & dive masters would welcome the opportunity to fully brief you on this site prior to your dive. |
